Frequently Asked Questions

If you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training, you need a USI to receive your qualification or statement of attainment. It is quick and easy to create your own USI; the process should take 5-10 minutes. Visit the following website and follow the prompts:

You can complete your enrolment via the website by clicking into the selected course and pressing “Register” to proceed or complete an enrolment form. Once your form is submitted, we will send you acknowledgment email confirming your enrolment and next step

USI stands for Unique Student Identifier. From 1 January 2015, each student will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to obtain their Qualification or Statement of Attainment from their Registered Training Organisation, when studying Nationally Recognised Training in Australia.

The term ‘language, literacy and numeracy’ refers to five core skills: learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy. These five core skills have been identified by the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) as the essential skills for individuals to hold to participate effectively in society including the workplace and the education sector.

If yes, how do I complete it?

Learners are required to complete the LLN assessment if they do not have prior education equivalent to the AQF level they are enrolling in. For example – if the learner is enrolled CERT IV Configuration Management, the learner needs to complete LLN Assessment if they do not have prior education equivalent to AQF level 5. During the enrolment process, we will ask you a few questions to determine if you need to complete the LLN assessment and if required, we will send you the online link to complete the LLN assessment.

We set you up to make a second attempt, if you were unsuccessful in the second attempt, we will set up a meeting with you to discuss the gaps you have and what kind of support you would require. There is a range of support available to meet your learning requirements.

We recognise that not all people are able to read, write, and perform calculations to the same standard. AKS endeavours to help participants who may have difficulties with language, literacy, or numeracy.

If a participant’s needs exceed our capacities, we will refer the participant to an external support provider such as the Reading and Writing Hotline.

The reading and writing hotline are a national telephone adult literacy referral service, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training.

Experienced teachers can provide callers with advice on ways to improve reading, writing, and numeracy skills and give information on adult literacy and numeracy classes in your local area.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP)

The LLNP provides language, literacy and numeracy training for eligible clients.

The program seeks to improve clients’ language, literacy and/or numeracy with the expectation that such improvements will enable them to participate more effectively in training or in the labour force and lead to greater gains for society in the longer term.

Eligible clients are referred to an LLNP provider by Referring Agencies, currently Centrelink and Job Network Members.

For all online training you can enroll and start studying, anytime you like. There’s no need to wait for a certain date or a new semester to start.

Entry requirements differ from course to course. Please refer to specific course pages to see the relevant course requirements.

Firstly, congratulations on completing your qualification early!

As an AKS student, your course fees need to be paid in full before we can issue your certificate/transcript.

AVETMISS stands for the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard. It is a national data standard which ensures consistency and accuracy of vocational education and training.

When you enroll, we will direct you to a form that asks you some personal questions, and your reason for studying. This is the AVETMISS data.

We are required by law to collect this data, and share it with the National Centre for Vocational Research Ltd.

No – these are different terms, although they are often confused.

Credit Transfer is the term we use when you already hold a specific unit of competency. We can use your existing certificate to give you credit towards your Qualification.

RPL is the term we use when you wish to use your work experience as an assessment only pathway to the qualification. You need to provide samples of work, references, etc. to demonstrate competency through real life experience.

If you are seeking RPL we will conduct the initial assessment for free and with no obligation. Once you decide to enroll with, we will charge you $500 to start the process. That money is held in trust until you either start studying with us or we conduct the first formal RPL assessment. Prior to your enrolment you will receive a fees letter that sets out very clearly how much and when you are requested to pay. That letter also has information on our refunds policy.

Your RPL Assessor will discuss in detail with you the types of evidence that are appropriate for the qualification that you are seeking to achieve. A good starting point for pretty much every qualification is a resume, job description and any qualifications or certificates you already hold. If you are a Defence member, a service record is a great help as well. The same goes for Police, Ambulance and Fire Officers.

The Standards that we assess against require that evidence demonstrating current competence is from the present or the ‘very recent past.’ They do not specify the time that would be considered ‘very recent past,’ as this may vary between industries. Basically, this means we must determine whether the evidence is recent enough to show that you are competent at the time we make the assessment decision. Generally, the newer your evidence the better. This does not mean older evidence cannot be included in the evidence used to make an assessment judgement it has less weight and needs to be supported by more recent activities.

Self-learning activities are structured activities for learners to understand and apply their learnings to different situations. Activities are designed to enhance learners’ knowledge and skills before they proceed to their assessment tasks.

Self- learning activities are not part of assessment, but learners are required to complete these activities before proceeding to the assessment tasks.

You will need to complete your assessment from your online learning account and submit it online.

There are three attempts for each assessment, you will be notified if you reach the final attempt. We strongly recommend you check and review the assessment prior to submission and contact your nominated trainer for learning and assessment support.

We make sure that our learners receive their learning and assessment activities feedback within defined timeline. In general, your submitted learning and assessment will be marked within 5 business days.

We strive to provide a superior learning experience. So, depending on the course you choose to study, your learning will be assessed through a combination of activities designed to enhance your knowledge.

Your course will be assessed online through our learning management platform. You will be assigned a specialist assessor for each module who will provide support while you complete your assessment. Assessments are carried out by using a variety of tasks, including:

  • Online quizzes, including multiple choice and short answer questions
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written reports
  • Case studies
  • Video and audio role plays and demonstrations.
  • Short courses – Up to six months
  • Certificate IV course: Up to 12 Months

It’s your responsibility to manage your study within your enrolment term. Your enrolment duration dates are available on your online learning account. You will be notified via email or text message 30-45 days before the course term expires.

No, you don’t have to. It is up to you how much time you would like to spend completing the course within the course duration. However, the expected learning hours for each unit will be around 50-60 hours.

Yes, the online courses are! There are no exams, or set timetables, so you can learn at your own pace. This means that if you have the time, you can dedicate more hours a week to studying and finish your course earlier. Or you can choose to study without pressure over a longer period.
